Designer Kate Valentine (Spade) may be no more. But her brand will live forever.

The fashion world has been shocked with the news of Kate Spade’s apparent suicide. She was a ‘great talent’ and will be missed for sure! Her iconic handbags, clothing and accessories have been embraced by luxury connoisseurs, the world over. Even in India, ever since she opened a store at DLF Emporio in New Delhi last year, delighted shoppers couldn’t seem to get enough of her hugely-popular American apparel brand.

Opened in partnership with Reliance Brands, Kate Spade’s effervescent personality resonated very well with Indian women, as her handbags were a common sight at champagne brunches and cocktail soirees.  Over the years, the brand has received great love and endorsement from Hollywood beauties and trend setters like Jessica Alba, the Duchess of Cambridge, Sarah Jessica Parker, Freida Pinto and Sienna Miller. Here’s a low-down on the Kate Spade store in India and why it will eternally be etched in our minds and hearts:

The store

The brightly lit boutique on the Mall’s second floor resembles a candy shop – the walls bursting with a bubble gum palette, as Barbie pink wallets recline over sunshine yellow pumps. The store has a multi-room design with a repertoire of shoes, ready-to-wear clothes, accessories and of course, handbags. You can shop for crisp white shirts, quirky beige camel-shaped key chains and minimalistic stationery. Kate Spade knew just how to balance her designs to match any girl’s mood!

Kate Spade's vibrant and unique designs – a black handbag suitable for all women of all ages, a pair of black heels with yellow polka dots giving it a fresh look, and a pair of funky and glossy golden heels.

Her beginning

Kate Spade started in 1993 when Kate Valentine worked as an accessories editor at Mademoiselle, where she designed her first handbag. She quickly debuted with just six silhouettes and Kate Spade New York was born.  Women loved her sleek and utilitarian products so much that it led to a swift opening of her first shop in 1996. Since then, there has been no looking back. As the company has grown multi-fold in the last decade, the brand has come to be known for its graphic designs and pop of colour, making it an iconic symbol for women.

Since 2007, the company has grown into a global lifestyle brand, adding jewellery, bedding, eyewear, stationery, and fragrances to its portfolio. Today, it has 140 retail stores in the US alone, while internationally, it owns more than 175 outlets. Even with such rapid expansion, Kate Spade has stayed true to her colourful and quirky designs that continue to evoke curiosity and passion, among its buyers.
