A Sneak Peek: Coach’s Spring Summer’18 Collection

A Sneak Peek: Coach's Spring Summer'18 Collection

You can tell a lot about a man by his shoes. But when it comes to women, you only need look at their handbags. A woman who carries a Coach bag is empowered and love to express their individuality – that’s what Coach’s creative director, Stuart Vevers, firmly believes.  Under him Coach, an iconic luxury bags brand, has slowly moved away from its image of a classy, monogrammed bag spotted only at formal dinner parties in the 70s to a more relaxed, colourful version that captures the glitz and glamour of New York, a place where the brand originated.

Its latest collection is inspired by the works of the famous street artist Keith Haring. “As a kid growing up Keith Haring was one of the first artists I remember. His work cut through for me. I didn’t necessarily know I was looking at art. I was just drawn to the imagery and the energy. It was playful and there was an optimism to it. Yet, he was also very much an artist connected with real life, the everyday and the city in which he lived and work—the same city I live and work in now,” says Stuart.

Stuart’s Spring Summer ‘18 collection is heavily influenced by Haring’s idea of ‘American dreamers’ and features a lot of the artist’s graffiti as patchworks and hang tags on the bags. “Like Coach, his art was born from the streets of New York. It was inclusive and for everyone. I have loved celebrating Haring’s work and values in our Spring collection, which is ultimately a celebration of New York’s diversity, energy, creativity and optimism,” he adds.  These are our five favourite picks from the collaboration:

The Parker Bag

The bag that Selena Gomez unveiled on her Instagram was the show-stopper at Coach’s Spring 2018 collection. The Parker is on everyone’s radar for its uptown elegance mixed effortlessly with a downtown ease. Made in two-toned black and brown leather with snakeskin details, it is finished with a studded outline along with a heavy crossbody chain. Selena paired it with an all-black ensemble in her photos. However, it will also look good with overcoats and sharp women’s suits. You can pick it up for a mere $450!

Coach X Keith Haring Camera Bag

Coach’s signature camera bag has been upgraded with Keith Haring’s iconic illustrations on its calf leather canvas. The simple silhouette of rust and black is detailed with quilting and colourful patchwork. The bag has multifunctional pockets that will fit your Tab, wallet, keys, and sunglasses quite snugly. The bottom padding also ensures your electronics stay safe in case you drop the bag accidentally. Price: $325

The Riley
The Kisslock Satchel With A Light Brown Base And Detailing With A Pink Heart And Black Straps Is A Fashionable New Handbag

Like the brand, the Riley bag has been reinvented. What started out as a plain, black leather, stocky bag in the 1970s has been transformed into a fun-loving, slender and colourful version. With Keith Haring’s graffiti, a front-open flap, and added features like credit card slots, coin purse pocket on the outside, the bag is perfect for party nights. It comes with a detachable handle so that you can carry it as a clutch.  Price $ 395

The Kisslock Clutch
The Classic Mailbox Comes With A Cream Base And Light Detailing With Yellow And White Flowers Over It

This is an improvement on the brand’s statement Kisslock satchel that was inspired by the iconic doctor’s bag; the kisslock closure is the only similarity between the two. The Keith Haring version is taller and much slimmer than the original. Made of refined calf leather and genuine snakeskin details, it has an outside turnlock pocket that is perfect to store makeup for a night out. The strap is detachable and adjustable that can be extended till the shoulder. Price: $ 495

The Classic Mailbox Bag

Coach brought back the mailbox bag of the 1970s quite recently. Made by Bonnie Cashin, the company’s first creative director, its design is inspired by the countryside mailboxes seen in America. The latest iteration is slightly bigger, comes in five colours and has graffiti hang tags. Just like the original Cashin mailbox, which was sold until 1973 only, the new version might prove to be just as elusive – only 300 bags are on sale online and at the New York flagship store.
Price $695

The India Connection

Everyone from Deepika Padukone to Kareena Kapoor love their Coach bags since the brand made its debut in India recently. Launched in 2016 in collaboration with Sanjay Kapoor’s Genesis Luxury, Coach has rapidly opened four stores in the country – one each in Mumbai and Chennai, and two in Delhi.  The latest store opened at the DLF Emporio Mall in New Delhi stocks the latest and much coveted Coach bags along with an assortment of accessories such as small leather goods, scarves, footwear and jewellery. The store also helps personalise your bags and offers after sales support.   According to the group’s President, Ian Bickley, who oversaw the opening of all the Indian stores, the bag collection would cost you no more than Rs 30,000. But if you want additional customizations, the cost could go up to Rs 50,000.
