The Incredible Life and Success Story of Ferruccio Lamborghini

Ferruccio Lamborghini

Ferruccio Elio Arturo Lamborghini was the son of grape farmer parents who went on with his life to see the face of great success. Born on 28th April 1916, this man pursued his wish to work in the field of mechanics. Initially, due to his interest in mechanics, he started working on a tractor which his father owned, and later, he took admission in a technical school in Bologna. Lamborghini indulged in various kinds of business ventures including the business of tractor and agricultural equipment manufacturing (1948), air conditioning equipment manufacturing (1959), and luxury sports car manufacturing (1963). In his final years, he retired to the estate that he had in Umbria, and there he continued winemaking till his last breath.

Lamborghini – early years

This Taurus man was born to Antonio and Evelina Lamborghini in the Province of Ferrara in North Italy. Lamborghini developed an interest in the machinery which his parents used in their farming, especially the trackers. When he noticed that machine was his passion, Lamborghini decided to pursue a degree in mechanics in Fratelli Taddia Technical Institute, situated near Bologna.

The onset of World War II

With the start of the Second World War, Lamborghini was appointed as a mechanic in the Italian Garrison at Rhodes Island in 1940, conducting supervision in the maintenance unit of vehicles. In the year of 1944, he was taken in as a prisoner of war in the Brits military where he served in the motoring department. The time he spent in the British military forces proved to be highly fruitful because it was here where he got a direct experience on repairing cars with limited supplies of its parts.

The post-war era

The following year, Lamborghini returned to his town and began to work on manufacturing tractors for the local farmers; the business started small but soon bloomed into something grand which presented him with the demand to shift the location of manufacturing to someplace else. In the following years, he successfully produced revolutionary tractors like the range of Carioca. The Carioca was widely famous for being a vehicle in which a farmer could start the engine with the use of petrol, but after coming alive, the vehicle engine would automatically switch to use the cheap diesel, as petrol price was in a prohibiting fashion. This amusing vehicle led to the establishment of the famous Lamborghini Trattori in 1948.

The creations he created for himself

The passion of mechanics and the years of experience took Lamborghini into tuning a Fiat Topolino for himself with which he entered into the Mille Miglia in 1948. However, he wrecked his car after driving for 1,100 kilometers by running it into a sidewall of a restaurant. Apart from cars, he also had a deep passion and attachment for boats. For this particular desire, he bought the Riva Aquarama Lamborghini, which was specially customized to suit his needs. The boat featured two Lamborghini engines and also had the installation of side railings which meant for water sports. The Riva was later sold to Angelo Merli by him in 1988.

Other ventures

With the success of his Lamborghini Trattori, Lamborghini began to try his hand in manufacturing air conditioning equipment. This business led into delving Lamborghini deeper in, and the man turned into a wealthy person in the blink of an eye. Lamborghini’s love for cars ended him up into owning a collection of exotic cars for himself of which the Mercedes, Ferrari, Maserati, and Jaguar were quite famous.

The experience which led to the establishment of Automobili Lamborghini

Lamborghini had, over the years, had collected the expensive car of various brands. He liked his Ferraris the most but found the services of after sale of this brand to be indigent. Lamborghini brought his annoyance in front of the owner of Ferrari – Enzo Ferrari but got ignored, and Ferrari utterly dismissed his suggestions. After the dismissal, he decided to tinker with the car himself and landed up with an improvised version of the vehicle. This experience inspired Lamborghini to start his own automobile manufacturing business, to build the best car meant for touring. Being an intelligent man, Lamborghini understood that the components of his tractors could be useful in his exotic vehicles and he implemented his idea very successfully.

Automobili Lamborghini

In the world of luxury cars, you will always find the name of Lamborghini. And it all started with the clash Lamborghini had with Enzo Ferrari. The headquarters of Automobili Lamborghini is in Sant’Agata Bolognese. This enterprise initially got showcased in the Turin Motor Show where the company unveiled their revolutionary 350 GTV. The company from this point strived to produce a sports car which includes the Jarama, the Espada, the Miura, and also the Islero. The company bloomed gradually, and the number of employees increased to a great extent. Lamborghini himself stayed in direct contact with his company where he would work in the production unit, whenever it was needed or whenever he found that something was not happening in he wants.

Personal life

Ferruccio Lamborghini married thrice in his life but none of these marriages proved to be long-lasting. Lamborghini’s first wife, Clelia Monti died at an early age during childbirth in 1947. From Clelia, Ferruccio fathered a son, Antonio Lamborghini, who later went to Japan and opened a designer clothing business. Ferruccio’s second marriage was with Anna Borgatti, but the matrimony ended up in a divorce. Lamborghini married for the third time, this time with Maria Teresa Cane and from her, he fathered a daughter, Patrizia.

The wake of economic turmoil in Italy and many of the deals taking a wrong turn led to a worsened state for the company. The situation came to a downward spiral when an importer from South Africa and the new military forces in Genoa canceled the orders of tractors.  The strain put on the company led to Lamborghini’s decision to sell the whole of his share to SAME, a rival company. The automobile manufacturing also found itself in financial strain. Lamborghini, therefore, sold the entirety of his holdings in two-fold by the year 1974 and retired to his 740-acre estate, La Fiorita where he pursued his interest in winemaking.

Death of Lamborghini

Lamborghini breathed his last on 20th February 1993 at the age of 76, before his birthday which was about to come in a couple of months. He died in Silvestrini Hospital, Perugia, where he was admitted fifteen days earlier because of a heart attack. His body is now resting in the cemetery of Renazzo.  Thanks to the birth of this man, we have a range of sports car which is still an all-time favorite for many, and the name of the company is not going to disappear anytime soon.

His La Fiorita estate now sells over 800,000 bottles of fine wine per year. The estate also features a massive golf course and Lamborghini’s luxury car collection which he was so proud of back in his days. The place is now open for visitors, but the visitors are allowed on the premises only by appointment.
